Burstable bandwidth is commonly available at speeds of between 5 megabits per second (mbps) to 45 mbps as DS3, 10 mbps to 100 mbps as Fast Ethernet, or and from 100 mbps to 1000 mbps as Gig E. For example, if you purchase a burstable DS3 circuit, you can commit to pay for 10 mbps minimum each month, but have the ability to burst up to a full 45 mbps during times of unique need for increased bandwidth. A burstable Fast Ethernet circuit would allow a business to commit to as low as 10 mbps each month and be able to burst up to 100 mbps as needed. Burstable Gigabit Ethernet requires a minimum commitment of 100 mbps but will allow a business to burst up to 1000 mbps. Larger bandwidth commitments are available for each type of service. Generally, the higher the minimum commitment, the lower the cost per megabit of bandwidth. Ethernet is more commonly available as burstable bandwidth than DS3.
Collocation facilities often have greater access to burstable bandwidth due to their close proximity to fiber. Customers that utilize collocation facilities are often better able to obtain burstable bandwidth than customers that terminate bandwidth at their business location.
